welcome to the mountains!
The mountains are one of the most diverse and wide spread biomes on the earth. Mountains are found on all continents, and are formed when two tectonic plates collide and push the land up. The average rainfall can vary depending on where the mountain is located and its elevation, but most receive 20+ inches per year. The temperature can also vary, but averages -20 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The mountains have all of the seasons, but the most dominant seasons are winter and summer.
Some of the animals that live in the mountains are snow leopards, eagles, owls, foxes, mountain lions, and small rodents including squirrels and rabbits. Animals adapt to the specific elevation to where they live. For example, bears would live at the same elevation as mountain goats. Some animals hibernate to keep warm during the winter, and some change fur coats with the seasons.
Mountain plants include wildflowers, like bluebells, the mountain laurel, shrubs, grasses, and trees. What type of plants live there depends on the elevation and location of the mountain range. The Tree Line is the point where trees can no longer grow, and is a very important factor in the ecosystem of the mountains. Trees in the mountains can be conifer and broad-leafed trees, but this also depends on the elevation and location of the mountain range. The plants will adapt to the elevation on which they grow. For instance, plants will be stunted around high elevations due to the fast wind speed.
Mountains are located on every continent. the tallest mountain above the sea is Mt. Everest in the Himalayas, and the tallest below the sea is Mauna Kea, an active volcano that makes up the biggest island in Hawaii. The tallest mountain in our solar system is Olympus Mons on Mars.
