Grasslands are large, open spaces with hills, shrubbery and flowers everywhere. Obviously, grass is the main type of plant in the Grasslands. There are also many types of flowers, with only a few trees populating the landscape. The few trees that do survive have thick, tough bark to protect themselves from fires, which happen commonly in grasslands. The grass in Grasslands regrow out of their roots, enabling it to survive fires and regrow the burnt top. Animals like Bison, Hares, Mice, Zebras, Lions, Wallabies, Cheetahs, Meerkats, and some predatory birds. These animals learn to hide in the little cover around them, seeing as there are usually very few trees to hide under. Their fur also acts as a camouflage, further concealing them from predators. The temperature of Grasslands can range from -40 in the winter to over 70 degrees in summer! This creates a very warm climate in the summer, and a very, very cold climate in winter and fall. Rainfall varies between the types of Grasslands, with savannas getting the most annually, with around 76-101 inches of rain every year. In most other Grasslands there is a relatively moderate amount of rain. Prairies have a moderate climate, with savannas tending to be hotter, but not as hot as deserts. Savannas also have shrubs and a bit more trees than a prairie. Fire, though very dangerous, actually helps grasslands. The burning ground releases nutrients from the soil, letting new grass and flowers grow, and provide good soil for farming. Summers, in all Grasslands, are hot and dry, making them the perfect time for fires.
